There can be few developers in the market now who would eschew double glazing, but if you are refurbishing an older building and it doesn’t have it – invest in it without a doubt. For there can also be few buyers either who would not demand double glazing, knowing as they do the efficiencies and the comforts it brings.
Installing double glazing may not be without its difficulties, especially in older buildings of historic interest, and may have to be done in ways that please planners. But developers also have to meet the requirements of not only discriminating buyers, but also environmental demands for energy efficient homes. Every home on the market comes with an assessment these days and it makes a big difference to have a high energy efficiency rating when you’re looking for interested buyers. It would be difficult to get the best price for a property, no matter how desirable, if this rating shows a poor return; buyers will know that their future will be costly!
Double glazing can only be a sound – even essential – investment for a property developer; there are various ways of achieving it and in some specialist circumstances it may even have to be that old fashioned concept of secondary double glazing. This can work well, though not as well as a double-glazed window frame made for the job, which will come these days with specialist glass for the exterior pane and specialist gas for the gap between panes.
I can’t imagine buying a property without double glazing; to return to the days of condensation on inside windows and heat loss, resulting in a chilly, humid interior no matter how much energy you pump into it on a cold day, is unthinkable.
